"El cante jondo se acerca al trino del pájaro, al canto del gallo y a las músicas naturales del bosque y la fuente. Es, pues, un rarísimo ejemplar de canto primitivo, el más viejo de toda Europa, que lleva en sus notas la desnuda y escalofriante emoción de las primeras razas orientales. [...] es el único canto que en nuestro continente ha conservado en toda su pureza, tanto por su composición, como por su estilo, las cualidades que lleva en sí elcante primitivo de los pueblos orientales. [...] la siguiriya gitana me había evocado a mí (lírico incurable) un camino sin fin, un camino sin encrucijadas, que terminaba en la fuente palpitante de la poesía «niña», el camino donde murió el primer pájaro y se llenó de herrumbre la primera flecha. La siguiriya gitana, comienza por un grito terrible, un grito que divide el paisaje en dos hemisferios ideales. Es el grito de las generaciones muertas, la aguda elegía de los siglos desaparecidos, es la patética evocación del amor bajo otras lunas y otros vientos. Después, la frase melódica va abriendo el misterio de los tonos y sacando la piedra preciosa del sollozo, lágrima sonora sobre el río de la voz."
